FAQs

Why use wireless sensors network?

Over the last seven years one of the company’s basic research activities was in the field of wireless sensor networks. For more than three years, the company has been developing a hardware and software platform to support applications based on smart wireless sensors. The platform is used in a number of European Technical Institutes and Universities. However the business target was not just to develop another wireless platform but to develop a sophisticated system with smart collectors that will be applied in complex and demanding environment where cabling is not an option.

LAROS should not be considered as a control System. It’s a fact that in modern vessels there are very advanced control systems equipped with hundreds of sensors. LAROS is a monitoring system based on measurements taken from sensors utilizing smart collectors. With these collectors LAROS data analysis team continuously measures specific factors and parameters and estimates the condition of the asset.

The system takes real time measurements, estimates the status based on pattern recognition algorithms and transmits only the rectified results (analyzed data) directly to the shipping companies HQs.

Why use LAROS?

1. Easy, fast, low cost deployment
LAROS can be installed easily, fast and with much lower cost than wired solutions due to fact that it uses wireless network technology for connecting multiple points of information. There is no need for dry docking and the actual installation can be made at sea.

2. High Compatibility and flexibility
LAROS installation does not require any changes in vessel’s equipment before system integration. Due to its innovative hardware design and intelligent communication protocol LAROS is the ONLY monitoring solution that is -fully compatible with all types of sensors/devices - redundant to the existing monitoring systems - deployed in any part of the vessel – one common solution for all types of vessels – one common platform for different types of measurements

3. High data integrity and double checked reports
LAROS uses a mesh topology wireless network to communicate data thus even in the event of a node’s (collector) malfunction data are sent to/by the next available. This automated process offers an alternative reporting method that can be used for cross-checking nonn or other tradiotional reporting

4. Low energy solution (autonomous wireless devices)
LAROS does not burden vessels energy consumption like all wired solutions do. It is a low energy solution that can be operated independently reaching even at inaccessible points (using AA batteries).

5. Fully customized remote monitoring data analysis
LAROS is the ONLY monitoring solution in the market that provides fully customized analysis of multiple parameters when selected. Due to the use of intelligent algorithms LAROS provides in real-time (24h/24) analytics and reports directly to the administration HQs.

6. Easily expandable
After installation LAROS solution can be expanded easily with less cost than a wired solution would.

7. 100% Company developed
Every part of LAROS solution (both hardware and software) is totally developed by the company. This makes support more flexible and always on time.

Where can I install LAROS in the vessel?

LAROS is a technologically advanced system that has been specially designed and developed to monitor uninterruptedly all the critical operation parameters of a vessel.

The wireless collectors network is tasked to watch over complex functions and multiple conditions in all areas of the vessel. It automatically generates and forwards reports about abnormal situations (suspicious-out of limits measurements etc) to vessel engineers and fleet managers in the HQs. LAROS Intelligent Collectors use algorithms to analyze data collected by multiple points and they produce early warnings, predictions or suggestions for proper action.

The wireless collectors can be installed in any Point of Interest in a vessel and take measurements of temperature, humidity, CO2, liquid level, fuel oil flow, Main Engine power-torque-rpm, Turbocharger RPM etc. in order to monitor remotely the condition of these points.

What is Condition Based Maintenance?

Condition-based maintenance (CBM), shortly described, is maintenance when need arises. This maintenance is performed after one or more indicators show that equipment is going to fail or that equipment performance is deteriorating.

This concept is applicable to mission critical systems that incorporate active redundancy and fault reporting. It is also applicable to non-mission critical systems that lack redundancy and fault reporting.

Condition-based maintenance was introduced to try to maintain the correct equipment at the right time. CBM is based on using real-time data to prioritize and optimize maintenance resources. Observing the state of the system is known as condition monitoring. Such a system will determine the equipment's health, and act only when maintenance is actually necessary. Ideally condition-based maintenance will allow the maintenance personnel to do only the right things, minimizing spare parts cost, system downtime and time spent on maintenance.
